5 of the Best Places to Enjoy Autumn Colour on Mull

Autumn colour on Mull can be spectacular. As the daylight shortens and temperatures fall, the fading bracken paints the hillsides in sweeping strokes of bronze.
The deciduous woodlands warm with buttery yellow birch leaves, copper beech foliage and the warm mustard feathers of the larch too. See the colour paint the canopy and decorate the forest floor with golden confetti.
But it’s not only the turn of woodland and hillside, you’ll even find autumn colour on Mull by the beach! A truly unique Hebridean flavour to the season, read on for our five favourite locations to soak up the colour this season.

1 Aros Park in Tobermory
Just on the edge of the island’s harbour town, Aros Park comes into its own for autumn colour on Mull. Trees wrap the 30-minute walk around the lochan in shades of amber and gold and on still days reflect beautifully in the water.
There are lots of trails to choose from, passing the lochan, following the river or taking in the tumbling waterfalls. You can even wander down to the old stone pier, where the golden treeline follows you right down to the edge of the bay.

2 Ardura Community Forest
This community woodland in the south of the island makes a wonderful walk. Beginning in the woodland, the path follows the river as it narrows, widens and pools, offering plenty of interest and scenic spots to sit along the way.
Further down the path, the views widen as you enter younger woodland, in turn revealing stunning panoramas to the Glen More hills, which take on their own yellow and bronze tones in the thin autumn light.

3 Millenium Woods at Duart Castle
Park beside Duart Castle and you’ll find the gateway into the Millennium Woods just off the main path to the left. The height of the trees and maturity of this wee woodland belies its age and offers a magical, tranquil atmosphere to enjoy autumn colour on Mull beside a beautiful castle.
Wander the paths, read the information board to learn of this special wood’s creation and warm up with coffee and cake at the castle team room after.

4 Glen More
Golden hillsides don’t come better than the views as you drive through Glen More, passing some of Mull’s highest mountains, beginning with views of Dun da Ghaoithe as you leave Craignure behind, before the road bends and rises to the Three Lochs and finally descends to Loch Scridain with excellent views of Ben More.
Here, the golden grasslands glitter in the thin, autumnal light, as cascading waterfalls – usually fairly abundant at this time of year! – add a glistening detail to the hillsides.

5 Knockvologan Beach
Enjoy the contrast on a fine autumn day between the bright blue skies and the coppery bracken fronds. As you hike between the string of white shell-sand coves that make up the coastline at Knockvologan, the landscapes around you have swapped their usual vibrant greens for russet hues.
Take a seat on one of the well-positioned benches to really take in these unique Hebridean autumn views.
