Calgary Explore the area, things to do and more

Calgary beach is regarded as one of the Isle of Mull’s finest, thanks to its beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters. Stay at Sands Cottage and you can walk to the end of the garden and be on this famed beach in just a few steps! Holiday cottage locations don’t get much better than this…

This is a great area to stay in if you’re interested in cycling, diving and water sports, or if you want to do some wildlife spotting of sea and golden eagles, otters, basking shark, deer and sea birds. As well as easy access to fishing from the coast, the cottage is close to several lochs and rivers for fishing for trout and salmon. Sands Cottage is an ideal base for walkers too. Apart from the obligatory beach combing sessions, a track can be followed west along the coastline of the bay to Caliach Point and there is also a walk through woodland to a local tearoom and gallery, where you will find a good selection of work by local artists.

Parking is available directly outside the cottage and there is a large enclosed garden with a picnic bench and a burn running alongside. With the burble of the burn passing by the cottage and the gentle swish-swash of the sea, your stay will be filled with the charming sounds of the coast.

Entering this rustic stone cottage via a porch, there is an open plan kitchen-dining area with beautiful stone floors, which continues throughout this level. The kitchen is well-equipped with modern cabinets and a Smeg fridge freezer, with a feature stone wall at one end adding real character. Enjoy the ease of modern day self-catering with the old-world ambience of somewhere much older when you sit down to eat.

The living room is a cosy, intimate space with a wood burning stove, a very good selection of games and comfortable seating, as well as a selection of books, television, DVD player, music system and wifi internet access. Dual aspect windows give views both toward the beach and to the woodland at the rear of the cottage – the best of both views. Also on the ground floor, at the opposite end of the house, is a spacious double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and shower.

A steeply winding staircase typical of traditional stone cottages like Sands leads to the upstairs landing. This in turn brings guests to another bathroom, with a bath with shower over, w.c. and basin, as well as the two twin bedrooms. The bedrooms are light and airy rooms that are nicely furnished, with views to the beautiful beach of Calgary Bay, as well as views to the rear of the cottage. Sands Cottage has been furnished very thoughtfully with local artworks and old photographs of Mull and the cottage has a rustic, coastal feel throughout.

Heading north, a 10 or 15-minute drive from the cottage is the village of Dervaig, with its village shop and pub, and Tobermory is a further 15 minutes’ drive from there, where there are a range of gift shops, eateries, an arts centre, theatre and various boat trips departing daily during the summer months. To the south there is the beautiful, unspoilt west coast of the island to explore.

There is little wonder this corner of Mull proves such an inspiration to those who visit. It is rare to find such a beautiful place, and even rarer to find a place like this with a holiday cottage in prime position to enjoy it.
