Lochbuie Explore the area, things to do and more

If escaping the everyday and settling down for a week beside Laggan Sands, just the two of you and, if you like, your four-legged friends too, sounds like your definition of the perfect Hebridean holiday, then The Bothy at Lochbuie could be the holiday cottage for you. The cottage offers a unique opportunity to base yourself in a wonderfully remote location, rarely explored by creatures other than wild goats, eagles and deer.

From your base at The Bothy, you’ll have the opportunity to discover little-known corners of Mull. Breath-taking coastal walks, trails that navigate remote peninsulas and the chance to end each day watching the sunset with the sand between your toes are the pull here, and adventurous spirits will find themselves well rewarded.

Getting anywhere involves taking the scenic route, beginning with the unmetalled farm track that leads around this remote and rugged corner of the coast to the front door. Suitable for a car with normal clearance if you’re willing to take your time, turn off the road and make your way slowly along the rough farm track.

Pass through pockets of woodland roamed by pheasants and open pastures before rounding a rocky headland, when The Bothy dramatically appears in view. Travelling at only 10mph along the rough track, you have excellent opportunity to spot the local livestock, deer and birdlife as you enjoy the ride. It’s not a journey to suit everyone, but for those willing to embrace the adventure, the location is truly outstanding.

This is a place to slow life down, leave the car at the cottage and immerse yourself in Mull’s magnificent scenery on foot. If you want to cover every corner of the island, then The Bothy may not be the property for you, but pull your boots on and you’ll find more adventures than you could possibly squeeze into a week. A stunning sandy bay beckons just moments from the door, while the rugged and remote hills rise behind the cottage, which adjoins Laggan Farm where the owners reside.

Entering the Bothy from the private drive, there is a spacious porch with ample storage space – perfect if you’re planning to make the most of Mull’s outdoor offerings on your holiday, with lots of room for walking boots, waterproof coats and any other outdoor gear that takes your fancy.

A glass door leads through to the living room, transferring the view from room to room, which in turn welcomes guests with its cosy multi fuel stove and outstanding views of the sea and mountains. Wi-fi is also provided, as well as a selection of books and games for evenings enjoyed in the cottage. Make the most of the opportunity to recharge your batteries, disconnect from the busy world and tune back into nature.

The kitchen is well-equipped and has a breakfast bar at the window where you can take in the surrounds and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. Complete with a contemporary copper splashback, enjoy a slice of luxury with all the mod-cons while feeling totally immersed in the wild.

The double bedroom also makes the most of the stunning sea views. Featuring a huge double bed along with plenty of storage for belongings, make yourselves at home and come the end of the week, you simply won’t want to leave! Just along the hall is the modern shower room, complete with walk-in shower, w.c, basin and wallpaper that promises a taste of the tropics.

There are fantastic walks right from the doorstep staying at The Bothy. Heading southwest following the coast past the old chapel, a track follows the south coast of Lochbuie. Heading northwest past the 15th century Moy Castle, the beaches and pebble shores of Lochbuie lead to a track along the north shore, which can be followed all the way to Carsaig. The Old Post Office at Lochbuie offers a farm shop and café too – ideal for long, laid-back brunches after a wander along the shore.

The large sandy beach at Laggan makes for a fantastic place to stretch your legs or do a spot of sunbathing, wildlife watching or photography. The views toward the mountain peak of Ben Buie are excellent. Rugged hills rise to the rear of the Bothy and a track can be followed that offers a fine vantage point. You may be lucky enough to see sea eagles, golden eagles, otters, red deer or even wild goats roaming the shoreline.

An added bonus of staying at The Bothy is that the owner can also provide home cooked 'ready meals' made using local produce for your arrival, much of the meat raised on their own estate. Further details will be provided for guests when booking.

Tucked in one of the island’s wildest corners, The Bothy offers a unique experience of a spectacularly beautiful part of Mull. If you’re itching for a Hebridean adventure, this is the cottage to get out there and do it.
