Fonn Aline (Gaelic for "Beautiful Sound") is a characterful wooden two storey cottage built in 1905 for a Miss Elise Mott.
The self catering accommodation occupies an elevated position above the road, with spectacular views across the Aros River Estuary to Aros Castle and the Sound of Mull.
There are two tales about how the house came to be called Fonn Aline: The first is that it is really a misnomer. Miss Mott wanted a Gaelic name and asked a native Gaelic speaker for a translation of Beautiful Sound, as in Sound of Mull.
He misunderstood and gave her the word for sound as in music. The other is that the name is correct and commemorates the death of a legendary piper whom local folklore says may have been buried nearby.
This is a characterful, private property, fantastic for families, and in a great location to explore the island from. A track from the house leads out to open countryside.
