Old island charm meets contemporary luxury at The Tontine, a converted croft cottage on the Ross of Mull. Bathed in light and filled with sociable spaces, it makes the perfect setting on the southern end of the island for a relaxed holiday in wild surroundings.

Sitting within a large and well planned and planted garden, there are areas of decking and outdoor seating that blend the interior space with the outside. Mature flower beds and wild flower areas border the lawns and there is a small burn that runs into a pond, which the cottage overlooks. The setting and views are beautiful, with views across the sea at Loch Scridain towards the rugged cliffs of ‘the wilderness’. You could easily while away an entire evening sitting on the deck with a glass of wine, watching the changing landscape and listening to the burble of the burn.

Step back inside the Tontine and you’ll find the hall, which opens to the main open plan living and dining space. This beautiful room is set over two levels divided by an open, solid oak frame. There are original artworks; comfortable seating and a good selection of books about Mull, along with games too – everything you need to make the most of your holiday. Double doors open onto the side decking and can open up completely, transforming the living space when the weather allows.

The dining table has comfortable seating and there is quality crockery and glassware to accompany it. The kitchen is well-equipped, with high quality appliances and a very good range of cookware and knives. A small feature window looks out toward the sea and a glass panelled external door opens to the main decking area, where there is an outdoor dining table and benches. A long utility room adjoins the kitchen with more storage space, appliances, a utility sink and another external door to the main deck.

The double bedroom has wonderful views from the patio doors across the garden towards the striking cliffs on the Ardmeanach peninsula. A large bathroom, which leads off the upper living area, has a wc, basin and bath with shower over, along with a wet room style shower. The twin bedroom has great views toward the garden. An adjacent bathroom has a w.c. basin and bath with shower over and complimentary toiletries are provided.

Beautifully furnished and finished throughout, The Tontine is a great choice for those seeking a quality self-catering cottage on Mull. There are nice features in every room, from the artworks to the use of Scottish timber in the joinery and woodwork. This really is a cottage with character.

Even better, the local area surrounding the cottage offers some of the Isle of Mull’s best beaches and there are good walks exploring the coast. Wildlife is abundant, with hen harriers often seen over the low-lying grasslands of Ardtun. Bunessan is the closest village, with a couple of shops and a pub serving lunch and dinner. Iona can be visited with ease, via the ferry that departs from the village of Fionnphort in Mull’s South West – perfect if you’d like to explore the historic Abbey.
