Nestled above the loch shore, Assapol Lodge sits effortlessly within its natural surroundings, with views across the water to the surrounding hills from its quiet position on a thriving working farm. The resident cows and sheep roam the surrounding fields, which are also frequented by wild populations of red deer, while harriers, eagles and owls take to the skies.
With the freshwater loch shore beckoning just a short walk from the garden, kayakers and paddle-boarders will be in their element with the chance to launch direct onto the loch for a sunset paddle. Anglers will be equally delighted with the location, as booking the lodge gives guests permit-free fishing on the loch.
Arriving at Assapol Farm, park in the designated parking bay and then follow the gravel path fairly steeply downhill and down a few steps to arrive at Assapol Lodge, cocooned by trees in a sheltered position overlooking the water. The sweeping deck with glass balcony will tempt you to simply drop your bags and soak up the view, before even setting foot inside the cabin!
On the ground floor, the small but perfectly formed living area makes the most of the wonderful loch views, picking up on the natural surroundings with an aptly themed colour palette too. A comfortable armchair and sofa invite you to sit back and relax as you plan the day's beach adventure, paddle on the loch or wildlife excursion. On the opposite side of the room, the compact contemporary kitchen offers all you need to self-cater, perhaps even cooking up your latest catch from the loch! A cosy breakfast bar offers laid-back dining with loch views.
Nestled to the back of the cabin lie the bedroom and bathroom. Continuing the coastal colour theme, the wee bedroom feels tranquil and in touch with the stunning surroundings, with elegant lighting to add ambiance to this cosy space. The bathroom is a good size with a shower cubicle, WC, basin and heated towel rail too.
Also on the ground floor is a helpful utility space with washing machine and dryer, ideal for drying clothes after a day in the hills in dreicher weather.
Spilling out onto the deck, the outdoor space at Assapol Lodge truly comes into its own, with a dining table for two with glorious loch views. Descend down to the lawn and find yet more to entice you, with a cosy picnic bench, atmospheric fire pit and pier giving access to the loch, perfect for a wild swim before warming around the fire pit.
Venturing just a few miles up the Scoor track to the wee parking area at Kilvickeon, discover some of the Ross of Mull's most beautiful and best hidden beaches at Kilvickeon, Dun a'Gheird and Traigh Bhan na Sgurra, as well as the coastal walk over the headlands to the ruined village of Shiaba, where remains of the old stone buildings still stand today following the Highland Clearances.
Naturalists will be in their element with herds of red deer roaming the surrounding grassland, eagles often spotted soaring above the hills and even the chance of harriers quartering the hillside. Guided wildlife tours depart locally on the Ross of Mull to offer guests an expert insight and fieldcraft to make the most of the wildlife on the island responsibly.
Boat tours sailing for Staffa leave from Fionnphort, around a 15-minute drive from Assapol Lodge, often taking in dolphins, porpoise and seals, as well as puffins nesting on Staffa in season. You can also hop aboard the CalMac ferry to Iona, home to yet more beautiful beaches, the historic abbey and many of its own wildlife highlights, including the elusive corncrake.
Bringing the best of Mull's wildlife to your doorstep, Assapol Lodge offers a taste of the wild without compromising on convenience, with the village of Bunessan only one mile distant, with its well-stocked village shop and welcoming sea view inn serving meals.
