Things to Do

Overlooking freshwater Loch Assapol, there's plenty to enjoy right on the doorstep of Assapol Lodge. Wildlife visits the area in abundance, from roaming red deer to soaring birds of prey, so keep your binoculars close to hand and your eyes peeled. Exploring further afield, there are local wildlife guides who can take you on a bespoke tour, giving you expert fieldcraft tips and helpful pointers to maximise your chances of wildlife encounters while you're staying on the island, whether you're keen to see otters, eagles or even creatures of the deep.

Anglers will also be delighted with the fishing opportunities in the freshwater loch, as well as along the surrounding coastline.

Assapol Lodge is located on the road to Scoor from Bunessan, which later becomes a gravel track. Following this track almost to the end brings you to Kilvickeon, where you can descend across the fields to a beautiful white shell-sand beach, with a dramatic rocky outcrop in its centre. A lovely quiet beach that is very appealing for a dip with its crystal-clear (albeit bracing!) waters.

This track also gives access to the route to hike along the headland to the clearance village of Shiaba, where ruined buildings tell of the settlements and people that once lived and worked the land here, before they were removed in the Highland Clearances from the beach below.

The Ross of Mull is home to some of the island's finest coastline, with more white sandy beaches than you could possibly squeeze into a week! Choose between those that are easy to find at Uisken and Fidden, and those that require a bit more adventure, like Dun a G'heird, Market Bay or even Traigh Gheal in the remote Tireregan Nature Reserve.

Enjoy the delights of the sea from the water too, whether catching the CalMac ferry that plies the short passage across the Sound to Iona, or setting sail for the island of Staffa aboard a boat trip to see the basalt columns, Fingal's Cave and characterful puffins in season (usually mid-April to July).

For wilder weather days, Assapol Lodge offers every comfort to watch the changing weather from the comfort of the cabin, but if you fancy venturing out, the Ross of Mull Historical Centre offers an excellent choice, just a mile or so away in the village of Bunessan, with an interesting community garden too, or pay a visit to Mull Willow at Ardtun, where you can enjoy a workshop crafting willow sculptures and nest boxes with a gorgeous sea view beside a cosy wood burning stove.

Whatever the weather, Assapol Lodge offers a location to make the most of every minute of your adventure here on Mull.
