Things to Do

Mull’s west coast is well-regarded for its unspoilt natural beauty and striking features, from Eas Fors waterfall that cascades down the hillside before plunging into the sea, to the rugged hills that rise above it and pockets of ancient Atlantic woodland too.

Wildlife abounds here, with the chance to see white-tailed eagles, golden eagles, deer, otters and seals for those with good fieldcraft along the coastline and in the skies. The cottage overlooks Loch Tuath, so you never feel far from the natural world and can enjoy many an hour scanning the sky and tide from the window.

Outlying islands will pepper your view and should you wish to visit them, an easy drive to Ulva Ferry opens up plenty of opportunity, along with the chance to call into the beautiful Lip na Cloiche gardens on your way past. Summon the ferry to visit the Boathouse restaurant and explore the walks on the community-owned island of Ulva, or hop aboard a boat tour to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles from here.

A short drive south delivers you to Loch na Keal, a National Scenic Area and superb area to watch for wildlife too. From here, you can also take on the ascent of Ben More (966m), Mull’s munro, at Dhiseig. Or, if you fancy a smaller climb that still rewards with excellent views, closer to home, climbing Beinn na Drise (424m) at Lagganulva will be well worth the effort. For a low-level walk, the circular loop at Treshnish passes through wildflower meadows and dramatic coastal scenery, taking in superb views over the Treshnish Isles.

Of course, being this close to the coast, beaches will also spring to mind and from Tostary Cottage you have easy access to several. Just a mile away is the beautiful grey sand of Traigh na Cille beach, which you’ll often find shared with the local Highland cows. 15 minutes’ drive northwards brings you to the beautiful white horseshoe bay of Calgary beach too, with a great café up the hill.

The island’s harbour capital of Tobermory is around a 40-minute scenic drive over the hill road, around the head of Loch Cuin and then past Loch Torr and the Mishnish Lochs, before arriving into town. A great day trip to sample local produce and seafood, visit the whisky distillery for a tasting and tour, or walk to the beautiful Rubh nan Gall lighthouse too.
