Rocking Stone Cabin enjoys a superbly scenic setting on the hillside above Lochbuie, with far-reaching views encompassing headlands, sea and outlying islands on a clear day too. You’d be forgiven for thinking such a staggering setting would come at a compromise to amenities, but with the excellent Old Post Office Café and Lochbuie Larder homemade ready meals just a short walk away, you can still dine in or out with ease at this peaceful island hideaway.

Things to Do
Rocking Stone Cabin is as much for the adventurous souls and explorers as it is for those who simply seek peace, wildlife and spectacular views. With the superb location, you could easily settle in for the week and soak up the changing tides, scan the seas and skies for wildlife and stargaze by night without even leaving the cabin!
But if you can peel yourselves away (and we recommend you do!) you’ll be in for a reward, with some of Mull’s finest hiking opportunities straight from the door. For lower level routes that are relatively easily achieved, the walk from the cabin heading west along the old pony track to Glen Byre, or east along the shore to Moy Castle, Laggan Sands and the mausoleum beyond will turn up plenty of postcard-worthy views.
For those not afraid to get their feet wet, the walk to Lochbuie’s beautiful stone circle is also another great low-level option to tackle, often spotting fallow deer as you cross the sometimes-boggy terrain.
Those up for more of a challenge will relish the opportunity to take on an ascent of Ben Buie (714m), which feels a spectacular peak to summit thanks to its dramatic shape and far-reaching views both to sea and in-land, across Mull’s mountainous interior, too.
For a coastal hike, keeping an eye on the tides, the approximately five-mile walk from Lochbuie all the way to Carsaig makes for a memorable adventure with interesting cliffs, geology and perhaps a wild goat or two along the way. Best planned with a car waiting to collect you at Carsaig.
Of course, being set by the sea, a stay at Rocking Stone Cabin promises plenty of vitamin sea, with two beaches in walking distance. The lovely tidal cove of Port a’Bheoil Mhoir is the closest, with the much larger stretch of sand at Laggan also walkable.
In this wild and rugged setting, you’ll find plenty of Mull’s most spectacular wildlife as your neighbours, from herds of red deer roaming the hillside, to the dainty fallow deer grazing pastures closer to sea level. Spot both white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles in the skies and the chance for otters, seals and even a passing pod of dolphins in the water if you’re lucky.
Whatever the weather and whatever the season, Rocking Stone Cabin perfectly frames some of the finest views on the island, and opens the door to even more.
