A timber-clad cocoon, snug against the hillside, that gazes out over the bay at Loch Buie and beyond to one of Mull’s last true wildernesses, the Laggan peninsula, and seaward to the isles of Jura and Colonsay too. Here, you will watch the light dance over the changing tides and dusk give way to star-filled skies. Rocking Stone Cabin is unlike any other, and one you’ll find hard to forget.
After leaving the road and following a gravel track up the hillside to arrive at the cabin, you’ll enter at the back of the property, opening the front door to be stunned by the expansive views in front of you. The open-plan style of the cabin means you’re never far from the sea or sky, soaking up some of Mull’s finest views whatever the weather brings.
The well-equipped, contemporary kitchen lines the rear of the cabin, offering all the mod-cons to self-cater with ease, including a full-size fridge freezer, dishwasher and coffee percolator for that all-important morning brew. A drink best enjoyed on the deck, enjoying the pink tones of sunrise and the refreshing sea breeze.
A wee dining table for two then flows onto the living space at the cabin, with a plush sofa perfectly positioned to enjoy the views while you cosy up beside the Everhot stove.
The sleeping area (open-plan with the living and kitchen areas) lies tucked round the corner, with clever design lending a cosy, retreat-like feel and just enough space for a sumptuous king-sized bed.
Sliding pocket doors lead off the main living space first to a useful boot room with hanging space for coats, then through to the surprisingly spacious bathroom with WC, basin and a large bath with overhead shower too.
Adventure begins from the door here with not one route, but many from which to choose. Pick up the old farm track and meander along the hillside, enjoying elevated views over Lochbuie, which is often explored at sea level, but rarely from higher ground. Cross burns and banks of heather and drop in and out of pockets of gnarly Atlantic oak woods, this is a walk with real character and plentiful birdlife.
Make a loop of it, or descend to Glen Byre and follow the old pony track back past dramatic rock formations at sea level and the wee sandy cove, Port a’Bheoil Mhor, to Lochbuie. You can also make your way from the cabin straight down to the beach – a route better suited to walking boots rather than flipflops, with a bag of beach gear for when you get there!
Lochbuie itself is home to many more superb walks, whether you take in the stone circle, circumnavigate the ruins of Moy Castle or venture on to the mausoleum and sweeping beach at Laggan Sands. Whichever route you choose, you’ll work up an appetite, so lunch or a sweet treat at the nearby Old Post Office Café will be well deserved!
