Things to Do
Naturalists will be in their element staying at Kilninian on Mull's north west coastline. Explore this stretch of Mull and you'll discover ancient Atlantic rainforest and oak woodlands at Lagganulva, the beautiful black sand beach, Traigh ne Cille, tidal shoreline at every turn, teeming with seabirds and a good chance of otters and seals, and eagles frequently seen in the skies.
The meandering single-track roads offer excellent views should you wish to venture out by bike, although be prepared for the hills! And for those who are keen to take on some summits, the ascent of Beinn na Drise (424m) rewards with beautiful views over Loch Tuath, Loch na Keal and in-land to Loch Ba too, without too much exertion. For a more challenging climb, then Ben More, the island's only munro, will certainly tempt from across the water.
15 minutes' drive north brings you to the Treshnish headland, where you can make a fantastic circular coastal walk of about 6 or 7 miles. Follow the headland round, passing Treshnish Farm's beautiful wildflower Coronation Meadow, before passing through a gate that frames incredible views to the Treshnish Isles beyond. From here, pick your way along the coast and enjoy the panoramic vistas and detour down to find the Whisky Cave.
Around the same distance driving south from Kilninian Cottage brings you to Ulva Ferry. Here, you can of course summon the passenger ferry to visit the community owned island of Ulva, with its network of beautiful walking trails, historic black house and excellent Boathouse cafe for lunch too. Boat trips to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles also sail out of Ulva Ferry with Turus Mara, or you can hop aboard the Lady Jayne with Mull Charters for their famous sea eagle boat trip (one to book well in advance).
Back on terra firma, Lip na Cloiche Gardens are at Ulva Ferry too - a stunning hillside garden full of botanical and coastal interest, where driftwood finds and rusty anchors rub shoulders with towering echiums and tropical plants you'd never imagine could survive in the Hebrides! A fascinating glimpse into Mull's unique microclimate and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
