Things to Do

There’s plenty to enjoy in the village itself, whether you follow the lane and soak up the loch panoramas, set up a scope close to the shore, or set off for a hike or cycle along the Quinish Estate’s coastal and woodland tracks. The adventurous will enjoy the all-day walk out to Quinish Point too, for yet more rugged island scenery.

With its varied tidal ranges, Loch Cuin offers plenty to entertain birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, with otters, seals and all manner of wading birds visiting the waters here. Both golden eagles and white-tailed sea eagles exist in the local area, so with a bit of fieldcraft and patience, your spotting opportunities are excellent here. There are also expertly guided wildlife tours departing from the village, which can be a great way to pick up tips at the start of your holiday.

Located in Mull’s north west, you’re close to many stunning beaches. Calgary Bay, one of the most accessible, is only a 10-minute drive away with its white horseshoe bay of shell sand and beautiful machair display in season. There’s a great wee café at the top of the hill too for coffee, cake and sourdough after a stroll. Further off the beaten track, the stunning coves at Langamull and Croig are within a short drive for those willing to pull on their walking boots.

There are also many excellent day trips to enjoy from this corner of Mull. Take the road west and venture southwards down the coastline, passing excellent hikes at Treshnish and Reudle, to reach Ulva Ferry. Here, there’s a beautiful and surprising garden at Lip na Cloiche open to visitors and also, as the name suggests, the ferry to carry you across to visit the community-owned island of Ulva with its Boathouse restaurant.

Boat trips also depart from here to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa, with excellent opportunity to spot marine life, seabirds and puffins in season (mid-April to July).

Tobermory, the island’s harbour capital, lies a 20-minute drive from the house in the opposite direction, where you can also hop aboard wildlife boat trips from the pontoons. The Main Street is filled with prettily painted buildings, artisan gift shops and independent cafes and restaurants, whether you fancy a rustic inn, the catch of the day or a taste of fine dining.
