Things to Do

The Ross of Mull peninsula has a character of its own and offers a beautiful place in which to base your adventures around the island. Known for its distinctive pink granite outcrops and stunning sandy coves, this is a walker's paradise, with more walks than you could possibly squeeze into a week's stay. Gentle ambles along the coast to shell-sand beaches like Kilvickeon, Knockvologan and Uisken promise a true taste of the island's breath-taking coast, whether a bracing walk in the Atlantic breeze or a bright day with the water so blue you're tempted for a dip. The adventurous might even explore from the water, with sea kayaking and sailing available locally at Bendoran Watersports.

The sea hugs both sides of the peninsula, offering excellent views to outlying islands as you explore the surrounding landscapes, with Jura and Colonsay visible to the south, Erraid and Iona just across the water and Staffa and the Treshnish Isles to the north. Boat trips depart from Fionnphort, a short 15-minute drive away, to visit Staffa and take in the magnificent Fingal's Cave, as well as offering the chance to meet the nesting puffins in season (late April to mid July), and the CalMac passenger ferry regularly delivers visitors to the neighbouring island of Iona, where there are yet more beaches to discover, as well as the historic Abbey.

Back on terra firma, Mull's most sought-after wildlife, from the impressive red deer stags to the majestic golden and white-tailed sea eagles, can all be spotted on the Ross for those who know where to find them, as well as hen harriers quartering the grassland and short-eared owls hunting too. Wild About Mull offer wildlife tours locally, based in the village of Pennyghael just along Loch Scridain, which can be an excellent way to begin your stay and provide plenty of ideas for where to visit during the rest of your holiday.

This corner of Mull retains its strong crofting ties, with much of the land still grazed by Highland coos and hardy sheep, with Ardalanish Weavers only a few miles away where you can see the mill in action and wool transformed into luxury garments and soft furnishings. You'll also enjoy the bounty of the land, with local Highland beef and Hebridean hogget available to purchase at Ardalanish, as well as local pork fresh from the croft in Ardtun, and all kinds of seasonal fayre from the Crofter's Kitchen a little further west at Kintra.

Should you prefer to let someone else embrace the role of chef for you, then a visit to the Creel Seafood Bar on your return from a day trip to the island of Iona will also be a welcome treat. There are pubs in both Bunessan and Fionnphort for lunches and evening meals, too, not forgetting the delicious option of homemade ready meals from the Lochbuie Larder to take to the cottage, featuring delicious menus of local estate venison, lamb and beef.
