The incoming tide shimmers from the window by day. A gentle glow flickers from the wood burning stove come dusk. And by nightfall, the skylights above offer snapshots of the stars when the skies are clear. Mabel Cottage envelopes you in the island’s nature, with a warm Highland welcome and remote-feeling setting, tucked well beyond the surfaced road down the rustic gravel Lochbuie Estate tracks - a great excuse to take your time and soak up the views.
You’ll find fallow deer and pheasants as your neighbours here, alongside the characterful goats, sheep and Highland cattle that form a key part of this working estate.
Follow the tracks from the door on foot and you can enjoy a different walk every day of the week, whether you venture to the beautiful Laggan Sands beach, to the romantic ruins of Moy Castle perched at the water’s edge, to the enchanting circle of standing stones, to the mausoleum, the pony track to Glen Byre, or even an ascent of Ben Buidhe!
The location is a walker and wildlife enthusiasts’ paradise, with the added surprise that despite the remote setting, there is an excellent café within easy reach by the shore at the Old Post Office, serving delicious lunches, coffee and cakes.
Arriving at Mabel Cottage, you step through the front door and the sea views come with you, with triple aspect windows soaking up the view in the wee front room. This hybrid space has a spot to pull off your walking boots and hang coats, as well as a wee dining area positioned to make the most of the view. There’s also a handy washing machine and dryer here.
Slide back the beautiful barn door, take one step up and you find yourself in the heart of the cottage. The ceilings sweep upwards here, opening up a beautiful voluminous space that is filled with natural light thanks to both windows and twin skylights. The living area is here, with a plush sofa perfectly positioned beside the wood-burning stove and window with a view.
All other rooms lead off the living room, with the cosy but perfectly formed king-sized double bedroom in one direction, with its quirky window back to the living room, and the bathroom and kitchen in the other.
The purpose-designed kitchen is compact but comfortable, with a back door to the garden bringing in extra light too. Guests can cook up a storm using local estate venison or freshly caught fish using the two-ring induction hob, enjoy a perfect brew in the morning with the coffee machine, or let someone else do the cooking with the excellent Lochbuie Larder ready meals available locally, with a full-size fridge freezer offering plenty of storage too.
The shower room is beautifully presented, with a large walk-in shower, perfect to warm through after a day out hiking or wildlife spotting, WC, basin and heated towel rail.
Compact but beautifully renovated, Mabel Cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing island escape, whether cooried in beside the fire, or enjoying a sundowner with a sea view in the garden.
