Things to Do

The area around Tiroran offers some of the best walking on Mull. Hike out to the Fossil Tree at Burg, formed 50 million years ago, and explore the remote MacKinnon’s Cave on the north side of the peninsula at low tide. There is also easy access to Ben More, the island's only munro, just around the coast at Derryguaig.

For gentler rambles, wander through the 60 acres of grounds, passing through ornamental gardens and into wilder areas, criss-crossed by burns and waterfalls and charming wooden bridges, or down to the private loch shore, reached by following the tumbling burn or the rowan tree walk, where you can explore for two miles watching for otters on the way. When you’ve worked up an appetite, return to the cottage or call into the Whitetail Coffee Shop around the corner.

The Ross of Mull is home to a wealth of wildlife, as are the nearby shores of Loch na Keal, a National Scenic Area. Book a boat trip out to encounter the sea eagles at close range or meet the puffins on Mull’s surrounding isles in season. Back on dry land, local experts will take you on guided wildlife tours to explore more of the island and meet its wild residents, including otters, birds of prey and deer.

A visit to the Whitetail gin distillery and coffee shop at Tiroran comes highly recommended, as do the whisky distillery and harbourside attractions of Tobermory, around 45 minutes’ drive north. Venturing south from Tiroran, discover the Ross of Mull’s secluded white sand coves, or make the short sail across and visit Iona for the day.
