Just as the name suggests, Woodland Cottage promises a sun-dappled, leafy retreat amid the beautiful mixed woodland at Tiroran on the Ardmeanach peninsula in south west Mull. The area surrounding the cottage, which lies in the grounds of Tiroran House, is a natural oasis, with babbling burns that tumble into pools, carefully tended gardens and direct access to a stretch of private pebble shoreline.
Guests can park with ease in front of Tiroran House, before making their way up the stone steps to reach Woodland Cottage. Within walking distance down the lane is the Whitetail gin distillery and charming coffee shop – a must-visit during your stay after trying a tipple or two with the gin gifted in your welcome pack, which is produced on the Tiroran Estate.
Entering the cottage, the porch provides a handy place to take a seat on the bench and pull off your walking boots, with ample space to hang coats, dog leads and jackets too. A step up leads you into the living and dining room, from which you can soak up the sea views from the window or curl up with a page turner in wilder weather.
Two comfy sofas and a TV promise plenty of space to relax after a day exploring the outstanding walks at Burg, including the route to the Fossil Tree or, on the other side of the peninsula, a visit to MacKinnon’s Cave when the tide is right. There’s also a large dining table and four chairs in this welcoming room.
The kitchen at Woodland Cottage has a charming country feel, with free-standing painted sideboards providing plentiful storage, alongside a traditional Belfast sink and a modern electric oven and hob, dishwasher and an under-counter fridge with freezer compartment.
After a long journey, the deliciously stocked breakfast hamper at the cottage will be a welcome treat, containing fresh produce including fruit, eggs and milk, as well as homemade bread, cereal jars, tea, coffee and sugar. You can also fill the fridge with flavoursome homemade ready meals, available to buy at the Whitetail Shop.
From the hallway, descend a spiral staircase to reach the cottage’s sleeping quarters. A large master bedroom awaits at the end of the house, with a plush super-king double bed (can be configured as a twin on request), built-in storage, dressing table and superb sea views.
The second bedroom is a good-sized single room, which benefits from ample room for an additional single Z-bed, built-in storage and an external door providing direct access to the cottage’s garden. In this private, lushly planted corner, there is a table and chairs to sit and enjoy the sun, while listening to the gentle flow of the burn passing close by.
Both bedrooms are served by a stylishly monochrome family bathroom, with a bath with overhead shower, W.C. and basin. Luxurious White Company towels and robes are provided, as are complimentary White Company toiletries.
The surrounding area at Tiroran has a host of treats to delight guests staying at Woodland Cottage. Follow one of several paths down to the loch and meander along the shoreline while the dogs take a dip in the sea. Find a quiet spot and take a seat to watch for otters, or if you’re feeling adventurous, embark on a walk across the wilderness headland while keeping an eye out for eagles soaring overhead. The wildlife-packed shores of Loch Scridain are within walking distance, and Loch na Keal is only a short drive away, as is the foot of the most popular route up Ben More, the island’s munro.
On wet weather days, cosy up at the Whitetail Coffee Shop or take a look around the distillery, which produces island-inspired gins and liqueurs. Pennyghael in the Past is only a short journey down the road should you wish to trace back ancestors of the past, while the Mull Museum and harbourside attractions of Tobermory are within easy reach for a day trip further north.
