Tiroran Explore the area, things to do and more

Forming one wing of a charming courtyard high on the Tiroran estate, where you'll also find Gardener's Cottage and Woodland Cottage in the expansive grounds, and surrounded by dappled woodland, The Old Byre promises a fantastic, pet-friendly getaway for those who enjoy the great outdoors.

Phenomenal walks lead from the front door across Burg to the Fossil Tree, as well as more leisurely ambles descending the lushly planted gardens, passing by waterfalls and burns, to the stretch of private pebble shoreline where the dogs will be straight into the loch for a swim.

From your convenient parking area, enter The Old Byre through an intimate garden that is fully enclosed, ideal for dogs, and benefits from an outdoor table and chairs, as well as a bench for birdwatching with woodland views. Step over the threshold through the front door and straight into the heart of the home – the open-plan, country-style kitchen diner. The built-in bench seat adds character and storage, ideal for stowing away coats and leads.

The fully fitted kitchen is excellently equipped with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine, under-counter fridge with a freezer compartment and a Nespresso coffee machine, guaranteed to fill the cottage with a delicious fragrance when freshly brewed in the morning and the perfect accompaniment to the breakfast hamper that awaits you, filled with homemade bread and conserves, fresh eggs, milk, butter, cereal jars and tea, coffee and sugar too.

With the table and chairs also in this room, you can enjoy a sociable cooking experience, followed by a hearty meal in good company. If you’d rather invite someone else to be the chef for the night, simply wander across to the Whitetail Shop at Tiroran and stock up on homemade ready meals to enjoy from the comfort of your own cottage.

The living room is also located on the ground floor of The Old Byre, with dual aspect windows giving views onto the pretty stone courtyard as well as the leafy canopy of trees. Country themed artworks decorate the walls, while two sofas and a comfortable armchair invite you to relax after an action-packed day exploring the Ardmeanach peninsula, perhaps with a G&T in hand from your complimentary selection of tonics, garnishes and bottle of locally distilled Whitetail gin, produced on the Tiroran Estate. There is a television with the facility to play radio through it and a good selection of books, board games and DVDs for entertainment, while the electric fire adds an ambient glow.

There's also a convenient utility area with a tumble dryer, which provides access to the downstairs shower room with a W.C., basin and heated towel rail on the ground floor.

Venture upstairs at The Old Byre to reach the cottage’s sleeping quarters and three well presented bedrooms. Step up and over the threshold into the bright and airy master king-sized double bedroom, decorated in a woodland-inspired palette of soft sage green, grey and cream. There is ample storage in this room, including drawers and hanging space, as well as a cosy cuddle sofa to relax in.

Across the landing lies the twin bedroom, another spacious room with a wardrobe and woodland views, as well as the second double bedroom, which again has plentiful storage and a standard sized double bed. The family bathroom is also located upstairs. A large room with a quirky, nautical theme and navy tongue and groove detailing, the bathroom features a bath with a hand shower, W.C. and basin, as well as a heated towel rail. Complimentary White Company robes, towels and toiletries make your stay feel truly pampering and luxurious.

A walker’s paradise awaits at Tiroran, with a network of paths exploring the Tiroran Community Woodland and the opportunity to spot eagles and other wildlife en route. On the other side of the headland, the tidal walk to MacKinnon’s Cave will attract adventurous souls, while the challenge of summiting Mull’s only munro will draw many to the start point at Dhiseig only a few miles away. Warm up with coffee and cake or perhaps something stronger at the Whitetail Coffee Shop on your return.

The Ross of Mull is also home to fantastic sandy beaches within easy driving distance of Tiroran. Make a day of it with a visit to enchanting Iona or a boat trip to Staffa, both of which depart from Fionnphort on Mull’s south west tip. The Old Byre really does deliver a slice of island living at its scenic best.
