Portfield is a stunning property set on the hillside above Portfield beach in the south-east corner of the Isle of Mull, at Croggan. The house has panoramic views over the sea and coastline and toward the mountains of the mainland. With beaches, hills and lochs all on the doorstep, this cottage offers a taste of off the grid living at its best, and is a brilliant base for those who love adventure and the great outdoors.
Ideal for anyone seeking privacy, peace and quiet, this cottage boasts a secluded location in a really beautiful setting. The surrounding area is a mix of open hills with rugged, rocky peaks, small lochs and deciduous woodland. The coast is rocky with pebble bays and a large sandy beach at Portfield.
The variety of habitats here mean that this area is home to a wide range of wildlife, with otters, deer and eagles all commonly seen. There are excellent opportunities for kayaking and boating from the beach, as well as enjoying life at a slower pace, removed from the buzz of modern life.
Portfield is reached via a track (2 miles) that is suitable for off road, or four wheel drive vehicles only. The house is off the electricity grid too (NO ELECTRICITY) and heating is provided by an oil powered Rayburn, which also provides hot water. There is a separate gas cooker and a gas-powered fridge. If you’re looking to escape it all, this is the cottage to come to.
Internally, the house is finished to a high standard with comfortable furnishings making for a very relaxing place to spend time. The well-equipped kitchen and dining area lead into a large living room with a cosy multi fuel stove and seating. French doors open to the rear of the property where there is an outdoor seating area for guests to enjoy too. Sit outside and all you’ll be able to hear will be birdsong and the sea – bliss. Upstairs, guests will find the bathroom along with a double bedroom and a twin bedroom.
In the evenings, when the sun starts to set, guests can light the multi fuel stove and make use of the battery powered lamps provided and push button LED (torch lighting) throughout the house. For the independent, adventurous traveller, the unique and remote nature of the house makes it a truly fantastic place to stay. There is no television or WiFi here, better to pick up a pair of binoculars; get out your watercolours; put pen to paper; or just put on your walking boots.
As Portfield is a fairly remote property, it is best suited to guests who are a little more self-sufficient and in good health. This is a truly fantastic base to relax and unwind, enjoy the natural world and outdoors in a beautiful area of the Isle of Mull.
