Here, you get stunning views west along Ardmeanach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-297 size-full\" title=\"Walker on the shore by mackinnons cave\" src=\"http:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/walk-cave.jpg\" alt=\"Walking to MacKinnon's Cave\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/walk-cave.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/walk-cave-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/walk-cave-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/walk-cave-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the shore and in the vicinity of MacKinnon&#8217;s Cave, the main rock type is called <em>psammite<\/em> and it belongs to the \u201cMoine Supergroup\u201d, which are around 1000 million years old. \u00a0This rock is mainly comprised of \u00a0sandstones that have been subjected to heat and pressure, which causes the rock to change \u201cmetamorphose\u201d into a much harder, crystalline rock, the psammite. \u00a0The rocks dip at an angle of about 40 degrees, making it difficult to walk.\u00a0 Great care should be taken while scrambling toward the entrance to the cave. \u00a0The psammites continue all the way round the coast and provide the bedrock for some of the most rugged coastal scenery that Scotland has to offer, a wild landscape of sea stacks, caves, fissures and natural arches.<\/p>\n<p>MacKinnon\u2019s Cave consists of a large main chamber with a sand filled floor.\u00a0 Some light enters this part of the cave and plants thrive near the entrance. \u00a0A narrower tunnel leads deeper into the dark of the cave before arriving at a second chamber, where rockfall blocks the way. \u00a0Deep caves usually have a good geological reason for their formation and Mackinnon\u2019s Cave is no exception, having been eroded out along the line of a fault by the relentless pounding of the waves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-295 size-full\" title=\"Mackinnons cave Mull\" src=\"http:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/cave.jpg\" alt=\"MacKinnon's Cave on Mull\" width=\"1200\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/cave.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/cave-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/cave-768x385.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/cave-1024x513.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above the psammites, there are rocks that are much younger, although still very old. These are sediments of Triassic age (200 to 250 million years old). The shore around MacKinnon&#8217;s Cave is strewn with large boulders that have fallen from the cliffs above of these Triassic conglomerates, which resemble mixed concrete. \u00a0Most of the lumps, technically called \u201c<em>clasts\u201d<\/em> in the conglomerate are of the Moine psammites from which they were derived. Heading further west along Ardmeanach, the way is largely pathless, skirting between the cliffs both above you and below to the coast.\u00a0 The views over the sea to Iona, Staffa and Treshnish Isles are mesmerising!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-299 size-full\" title=\"Person inside Mackinnons cave\" src=\"http:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/deep-cave.jpg\" alt=\"Deep inside MacKinnon's Cave\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/deep-cave.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/deep-cave-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/deep-cave-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.isleofmullcottages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/deep-cave-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above the Triassic conglomerates\u00a0can be found on the obvious \u201cterrace\u201d of cliffs. These were formed by great flows of lava dating to the Palaeogene period ca. 60 million years ago. Each layer is a distinct, separate lava flow, a topography known as \u201ctrap\u201d.\u00a0 The westernmost area of Ardmeanach is known as \u2018The Wilderness\u2019 and it certainly feels like an apt name as you venture below the towering crags.\u00a0 The fossil tree is close by too, but most of people will walk to it from Burg \u2013 another adventure we will cover at some point!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Feeling inspired?
