The Smiddy is a stone built holiday cottage situated in the south-eastern corner of Mull, sleeping four. This well-kept cottage looks out towards the sea loch and is in a particularly good location for seeing Mull’s wildlife and for exploring all areas of the island easily. With water, woodland and wildlife all visible from the window, this cottage is a nature-lover’s paradise, with hen harriers and sea eagles popular birds to spot here.
The Smiddy has ample parking for two cars and is set back from the road with the owner's accommodation adjacent. There is a garden to the front with a hedged archway that nicely frames the sea views. To the rear of the cottage there is a larger, lawned garden, planted with a range of fruit trees, which guests can make use of when in season.
Entering The Smiddy, there is a spacious dining room with large windows. The dining table comfortably seats six and there is a chaise longue, a 'green man' bench and a piano, making the room a great place to enjoy a meal, or music, washed down with a few drams. The living room next door also has large windows to the front, letting in lots of light with views towards the loch. There is comfortable seating set around a wood burning stove and a range of games and books about the local area provided too – great for helping you make the most of your Isle of Mull holiday.
The kitchen is set to the rear of the cottage and is well-equipped for a self-catering holiday. There is a breakfast table for a morning coffee and a large window overlooks the garden. A door leads directly to the rear garden with outdoor seating that allows guests to really make the most of this tranquil spot.
A hallway off the living room leads to both bedrooms. The double bedroom has plenty of furniture for belongings, and a dressing table. The twin bedroom has built in storage space and there is a convenient cloakroom with a w.c. and basin too. The modern family bathroom has a large shower unit, basin and w.c.
Lochdon is a small hamlet set around the shore of the tidal sea loch. The area is a haven for wildlife and a wide variety of bird species are seen in the local area, including white tailed eagles and hen harriers.
From the cottage, you can also enjoy walks in the local area. The shore of Loch Don can be explored and there is a small sandy bay at Grasspoint (three miles away), where there are resident highland cattle and red deer often roaming the grasslands too. The flora and fauna is particularly good in the springtime.
Craignure is the nearest village (just five minutes by car) and has a village pub serving meals, coffee shop, Spar shop and village hall. There is the Isle of Mull swimming pool and spa just outside the village too. Duart Castle can also be easily visited and has a beautiful setting. As well as taking a tour of the castle, you can walk the grounds and stop for lunch in the tearoom there.
The Ross of Mull and Iona are also easily accessible from The Smiddy. Fionnphort, where ferries depart to Iona, can be reached in around an hour. Tobermory, the main town on the island, is a 45-minute journey and offers excellent shopping and dining opportunities. There is a mussel farm by Loch Spelve a few miles up the road from the house, where the road turns off to Croggan and Lochbuie – two more fantastic areas to explore during your stay at The Smiddy, with some stunning coastal scenery and a backdrop of mountains.
