Sands Cottage is a traditional stone cottage enjoying a superb position right beside the beach at Calgary bay. Guests can walk to the end of the garden and be on the beach in just a few steps. Calgary beach is regarded as one of the Isle of Mull’s finest, due to its beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters. Parking is available directly outside the cottage and there is a large enclosed garden with a picnic bench and a burn running alongside (fenced).
Entering the cottage via a porch there is an open plan kitchen dining area with beautiful stone floor which continues throughout this level. Finished to a high standard, the kitchen is well equipped and the feature stone wall at one end adds real character, making it a great place to enjoy a meal.
The living room has a wood burning stove, a very good selection of games and comfortable seating as well as a selection of books, television, dvd player, music system and wifi internet access. Dual aspect windows give views both toward the beach and to the woodland at the rear of the cottage. Also on the ground floor, at the opposite end of the house is a spacious double bedroom with ensuite bathroom and shower.
A winding staircase leads to the upstairs landing from which is another bathroom with bath with shower over, w.c. and basin as well as two twin bedrooms. Both bedrooms are light and airy rooms, nicely furnished, with views to the front (beach) and rear of the cottage. Sands Cottage has been furnished very thoughtfully with local artworks and old photographs of Mull. These are nice additions to what is already an outstanding place to stay for a family holiday on Mull.
This is a great area to stay in for those interested in cycling, diving and water sports, or for those wanting to do some wildlife spotting of sea and golden eagles, otters, basking shark, deer and sea birds. As well as easy access to fishing from the coast, the cottage is close to several lochs and rivers for fishing for trout and salmon. Sands Cottage is an ideal base for walkers too. Apart from the obligatory beach combing sessions, a track can be followed west along the coastline of the bay to Caliach Point and there is also a walk through woodland to a local tearoom and gallery where you will find a good selection of work by local artists.
Heading north, a ten or fifteen minute drive from the cottage is the village of Dervaig with its village shop and pub, and Tobermory is a further fifteen minutes drive from there, where there are a range of gift shops, eateries, an arts centre, theatre and various boats trips departing daily during the summer months. To the south there is the beautiful, unspoilt west coast of the island to explore.
There is little wonder this corner of Mull proves inspiration to those who visit; it is rare to find such a beautiful place.
